First Try at Coloring

Here's the progress of my latest project. I took one of my older drawings and used my tablet to outline it and color it a bit. Then I freehanded some shadows in. The shadows really make the picture, so I'm going to have to try much harder next time.

Haha, I know it's horrible, but first tries are supposed to be horrible, right? I'm hoping to get better, obviously. I'm going to try and pay closer attention to other artworks I see to try and pick up on more techniques.

It's pretty nice for your first try.
Say, did you digitally ink the lineart?

Yes, I used the ink tool in Gimp along with a tablet to do the inking. It was my first time doing that as well, so it came out very rough.

I remember using GIMP in my early days, though for a really short time before switching to Photoshop CS2.

You might want to tweak a bit the brush tool, allowing pen pressure support. Does a wonder when you ink/CG directly with your tablet.

Then again, I'm still working on my digital inking skill. The last one that was done directly in PS was around last week http://yuuki-kazu.deviantart.com/art/dA-ID-2010-2-167485892

Actually, gimp was automatically supporting the pressure sensing, but I had to turn it off because I was having trouble controlling it.

As for photoshop, thats really a bit too expensive for me xD.

And yeah, I saw your drawing yesterday night, and I realized why you picked the name CatWithABrush xD.

I simply can NOT sketch using a tablet. I try and fail T_T.

You could always try stuffs like SAI Paint tool, or you could go through the unmentionable sources for legal issues xDD.

Getting used to the pen pressure feature is good thing, there's a lot of stuffs that you could do with it.

And keep on working on your sketch. You will notice how practices make a lot of differences later

Well, I guess I can try working with the pen pressure feature to get used to it more. I'll also keep trying to learn to sketch on the tablet, but I doubt it'll ever replace pencil and paper for ease for me. I'll also check out SAI Paint. Thanks for your help :D
