Hanako to Guuwa no Tera is a fantastic manga about a man named Asou Daisuke who is nicknamed the Folklore Detective. Asou has his own detective Agency, and he works alongside his partner Hanako.
The story focuses heavily on things called allegories. Allegories I guess can be defined as things that are only real if you believe in them. Each chapter usually focuses on it's own allegory, but there were a few cases that spilt over into multi-chapter format.
Definitely my favorite character is Hanako. There are many reasons, so I guess I should list them here. She is a loli, she has awesome Rika-like hair, her eyebrows are killer, she's a super tech, and she has a giant part in the story that I was able to really enjoy.
The manga is a great mix of action and drama and it's a great deal of fun to read. Stuff like this is my favorite. I like stories that are scary, but not so scary that I'll have crazy nightmares. I enjoyed the fresh storyline and the focus on allegories, mostly because I'd never heard the word allegory until I started reading this manga; I'll always associate the two together from now on. I also like learning about Japanese scary stories, such as the Mary doll story or the "red paper, blue paper" story.
My one and only complaint about this manga is the fact that(*spoilers*) after the first few chapters, nothing more is mentioned about Asou's belief that if he has 100 consecutive hiccups he will die. From the moment I read the overview, I was expecting at least one extremely high tension moment where he reaches up to 99 hiccups, but it just didn't happen.
My Rating: 10/10
If you haven't read this yet, then go and get to it. It's only 18 chapters, and it's not something to be missed. Nice art, fresh storyline, loveable characters, and cool settings make this an awesome manga for me.

Alright everyone, here's my list of my favorite characters of the decade. This list is in no particular order. Ahh, that's right. Yes, I made a list. Picking a favorite character is hard, and I just couldn't decide. I figured it'd be much easier on my conscience if I just made a list.
So, enjoy the list and be sure to comment! Remember, Onion is accepting of all comments, and he even tolerates people saying mean things. :D

Before I start let me make this clear, all games featured in this list are based on US release dates.
The views and opinions expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the views of Atv-Oni-Ota blah blah blah
I've played plenty of great games this year so it was a hard choice. You may notice that there are no FPS or racing games in this list. Let me get this out of the way first, if you say were is my Call of Duty or where is my Fallout... move the f*ck on, you aren't going to find those in this here list.
Anyways lets get on with this thing.

Well it's that time. It is now December 21st and time for my first of seven posts this week. For this post (if you couldn't tell from the title), I will post my pick for best anime of 2010. I hope to see plenty of responses to this and hope to see many of you posting your pick as well.
-The views expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Atv-Oni-Ota.-
It was extremely hard deciding what to pick. There were a few good titles that came out this year, but alas I can only pick one. Without further adieu...

Atvrcr has invited me to participate in his list making fun for the end of the year. And since today's the 21st, that means it's time to post about my favorite anime of 2010! Now, there's some things you should note before I reveal what my favorite anime of the year is. First, remember that this is my opinion and that it does not reflect the combined views of the Atv-Oni-Ota team. And Second, this is MY opinion and I accept challenging comments, praising comments, and bashing comments all with a happy face. With that out of the way, let me reveal my favorite anime of the year!
You may be wondering what anime I've even watched over this year. So, I've compiled a list for you, the readers, so that you can see what I'm gauging by. Since, of course, I can only work with the shows I've actually watched. Here is that list:

Atv X Oni Showdown!!
Created by

Welcome everyone to the very first Atv X Oni Showdown!! Let me explain the rules. Quite simply, this is a drawing session between Atvrcr and I with a common theme to link both drawings. Step 1 - Before we start drawing, we each throw out keywords that must be included in the drawing. Step 2 - We establish a set time limit to ensure a fair showdown. Step 3 - We draw in an epic battle of wits, stamina, and genius.
This is the very first time we've done this, and we've yet to establish much besides the rules I've just described. I actually found it to be quite exhilarating toward the end when I was running out of time to finish. Anyway, here's the down low.

Goodbye Anime...?
Created by
Onion
According to Sankaku, a recently passed law is supposedly going to destroy anime as we know and love it by July 2011.
Tokyo’s ban on anime, manga and games featuring “virtual crimes” or which are “likely to interfere with the healthy development of youth” has passed after the DPJ agreed to support it.Now I'm not entirely sure what this entails, but it sure doesn't sound like good news. It sounds like all late night anime as we know it is going to be entirely removed and labeled as 18+. The same goes for manga.
The DPJ’s only addition to the critical portion of the law was a short rider which requests “prudent application of the law in light of any artistic, social, scientific or satirical merits the work might express” – it does not however add any legal obligation to consider these, or establish any clear or indepdently enforced criteria for judging whether a work can be declared “harmful” or not.
Even more bizarrely, the final draft actually removed a passage that imposed “a duty not to possess [photographic] child pornography” on Tokyo residents, whilst leaving the section banning erotic manga and anime (and explicitly excluding photographic materials) all but unchanged – that the bill is intended exclusively as an “anti-otaku” law seems to be beyond doubt.
It is very difficult to objectively assess the scope of the law – along with vague and subjective terms like “interfere with the healthy development of youth,” the law also includes “etc.” on the end of most of its examples, leaving it quite unclear, for example, whether the “improper glorification of illegal sexual activity, etc.” applies to only virtual sex crimes, or all crimes in general – presumably the interpretation adopted will be whichever is convenient to censors.
Similarly, the ban’s mention of “rape and other sexual acts which violate societal norms” seems inevitably to point to a ban on depictions of homosexuality, considering who was behind the law.
The generally expected form the law will take is that of a “amakudari” (a pervasive system of sinecures for retired bureaucrats) body which will inspect all anime, manga and games, with only those titles receiving approval as “healthy” able to be sold regularly in Tokyo shops – the rest will be relegated to the “adult corner.”
The most immediate and direct effect of the law will almost certainly be to see ecchi manga such as To Love-Ru, bishoujo titles such as Champion Red and most BL manga, as well as any seinen manga with especially mature themes, banned from general sales – presumably most will then be cancelled due to a lack of suitable magazine or tankobon distribution channels, with a few perhaps being resurrected as 18+ ero-manga.
As has already been seen, publishers will also likely be purging future anime, manga and games of any content liable to fall foul of the law, and removing older titles from distribution.
The law probably also spells the end of most late night anime in Tokyo (and by extension, everywhere else), which it would appear to ban under its distribution clause; given the vague wording of the current season alone it seems Ore no Imouto, Panty & Stocking, Yosuga, Sora no Otoshimono, Milky Holmes and others would all fall foul of its various stipulations.
There is also some doubt as to whether Comiket will be able to be held under the new regulations – if not, its cancellation or removal to another prefecture seems likely, although a lack of sufficiently large spaces may severely complicate this.
The law is expected to be signed into law on the 15th after an additional vote and then come into effect in July of 2011, so with magazine, tankobon, anime and game release schedules being what they are, it seems likely its effects will be felt much sooner; in a genuinely democratic state there might be scope to overturn it before then, but from what has been seen so far it seems unlikely publishers have the guts or savvy to do anything about it.
I have here a quotation from my friend Bluewolf963, a loyal denizen of Baka Wolf.
Well, I suppose I'll give my opinion as directly and concisely as possible:I completely agree with what Bluewolf963 says. This is just nonsense. People seriously need to stop screwing with people's lives. I wonder if any of the people who are passing these laws have ever even watched anime before? It's like colonization. Taking something without consent. Except in anime form.
this is bull shit.
No, seriously, it is. Especially since it's been proven time and again that such crimes occur less frequently in Japan, as opposed to other places that already have laws against such things. But hey, if they want to step backwards, it's not like those of us in America can really do much about it. There would be serious repercussions if it affects Comiket, though. Comiket is big for the anime and manga industry, and hurting it would likely have a good impact on the industry as a whole.
Also, does this mean that Atvrcr's(I jest) precious loli scenes will soon disappear from anime? This law creates more questions than it answers, and clearly, I think it's a bad idea. I'm hoping that there is some miracle that overturns the law in order to preserve otakuism as it is.

Free FFXIV for PC, PS3 owners SOL
Created by
atvrcr
Final Fantasy XIV, what a colossal cluster fuck it has been since it launch, no excuse me that is wrong, even BEFORE its launch. I'm sure most are pretty tired of hearing about the game, and for those of you who are not, you are probably entertained by seeing just how far down this thing can go. We've seen multiple free trial extensions, but now they've even done something better. Until the game is considered "quality" it will be free to play. Hell I'm curious to see if it will be around by that time. The PS3 version has been delayed until an unknown date. After hearing all the horrible things about this game, will any PS3 owners even want the shitty low-rez version anyways? I guess we'll just have to wait until the new "quality" updates are out to see what the future holds, once it's out I am sure the 100 remaining players will enjoy the game to the fullest.

No Bra Review
Created by
Onion
No Bra follows the life of Masato! He's living on his own, and he's in either high school or University; I couldn't quite figure out which. Anyway, one day, a cute and irresistibly charming girl named Yuki shows up at Masato's apartment and claims to know Masato. Yuki ends up moving in with Masato. Just one problem: Yuki is a guy! The antics ensue in a very entertainable fashion. :D
One of my favorite things about this manga is that the story does develop quickly. This isn't your typical "last forever back and forth harem". Masato frequently makes choices, and consequences follow and this makes the manga have a nice pace and doesn't leave the reader frustrated at all. So for those of you looking for something that has development instead of just endless harem madness, this can be a good choice for you. And at only 31 chapters, it's not an extraordinary investment.
Of course, my favorite character is Yuki. He is so cute and just as all the other characters in the manga say, "his charm is irresistable." I also loved Hidepon. Not because of his personality or anything, but because of his immense size. It's rare to see such a fat character in manga, and I loved this guy. The Sensei is a bit crazy and just a totally unrealistic character, but that's what gives her her charm, I guess.
The art is at a normal level. Somewhat more detailed than Lucu Lucu, yet not as detailed as something like Clear Qualia or Shibariya Komachi, but still very enjoyable. The only complaint I have has to do with Masato. Sometimes I jsut found him to be drawn strange, as well as his hair having absolutely no volume at all.
In conclusion, yes, I would recommend this manga. The story progresses at a desirable pace, and the plot is funny at times, and tense at others; a very nice combination. I only have one warning for those who are thinking about checking this out: As you may have guessed, this manga does contain lot's of boy on boy action. Nothing explicit, but nonetheless, it is there. So if you don't like that stuff, you may want to stay away, but I really enjoyed the manga, but, well... I guess it's because I don't have a problem with the boy on boy stuff.
My Rating: 8 / 10
I thought it was a great manga, and if I could erase my memory of it, I'd probably go and read it again. I know that makes no sense, but just make believe it did...
